The marquise cut — also known as the navette (French for "little boat") or eye cut — has origins dating to 18th-century France, where it was commissioned by King Louis XV to mirror the shape of the lips of his favourite. It is a brilliant-cut with 58 facets arranged in an elongated oval that comes to a point at each end. The marquise is one of the most flattering cuts for the finger: its length visually elongates and slims, making any carat weight look larger than it measures. A 1.00ct marquise diamond looks significantly larger face-up than a 1.00ct round brilliant — one of its most practical and appreciated properties.

Marquise Cut Solitaire Diamond Ring
The marquise is the shape that rewards carat investment most generously. Because of its elongated, face-up geometry, a marquise diamond shows more surface area than a round brilliant of the same carat weight — sometimes 15–20% more. Worn on the finger, it also creates a lengthening effect: the two pointed ends draw the eye along the length of the finger, making the hand look longer and more slender. It is one of the most flattering and most distinctive engagement ring shapes available.
This solitaire setting places the marquise in a simple mount in 18K gold — white, yellow or rose — allowing the diamond to set the tone entirely. The prongs hold the stone securely while keeping maximum surface area exposed to catch light at every angle. Available from 0.50ct to 2.00ct, every stone is D–E colour and VVS/VS clarity, grown by CVD and graded by the IGI.
Lab-grown CVD marquise diamonds cost 50–60% less than mined equivalents of the same grade, which means you can reach a carat weight with a lab diamond that would be significantly out of budget in a mined stone — the marquise's natural size advantage makes that upgrade even more visible.
- Marquise cut — maximum face-up size per carat of any shape
- Elongating effect on the finger — the most flattering brilliant cut
- D–E colour, VVS/VS clarity — brilliant white, eye-clean
- CVD lab-grown — real diamond, ethical and traceable origin
- 18K white, yellow or rose gold — all available
- IGI grading certificate included
- 50–60% less than equivalent mined marquise solitaires

Why the marquise maximises apparent size. A marquise diamond has a larger table (flat top surface) relative to its carat weight than a round brilliant. This means more of the stone is visible face-up on the finger. A 1.00ct marquise typically measures around 11–12mm in length vs. 6.5mm diameter for a round of the same weight — making it look notably larger. The elongated shape also distributes weight along the finger rather than concentrating it in a circle, further enhancing the visual presence of the stone.
Caring for Your Marquise Cut Solitaire Ring
The two pointed tips of a marquise diamond require the same careful handling as a heart cut's point: they are the areas most susceptible to chipping from a hard knock. Remove the ring before any activity involving impact, and store it in the box or pouch when not wearing it.
Cleaning at Home: Soak for two minutes in warm water with mild dish soap. Use a soft toothbrush to clean around and underneath the setting. The marquise's brilliant facets respond dramatically to cleaning — the difference in sparkle is immediately visible. Rinse and dry with a lint-free cloth.
Daily Wear: Remove before swimming, perfume, moisturiser, or vigorous activity. The solitaire prongs hold the marquise securely, but annual prong inspection is recommended — particularly the prongs protecting the two pointed tips.

Why This Ring
The Marquise Advantage
Four reasons the marquise is the most flattering and best-value solitaire cut available.
The marquise shows more surface area per carat than any other brilliant cut. A 1.00ct marquise typically looks as large as a 1.20ct round brilliant — giving you a diamond that appears 15–20% larger than its weight suggests.
The two pointed ends draw the eye along the length of the finger, creating a lengthening and slimming visual effect. The marquise is universally considered the most flattering diamond shape for the hand — worn point-up, it is particularly striking.
Every marquise diamond is graded by the IGI to confirm D–E colour (colourless) and VVS/VS clarity (eye-clean). The certificate ships with every ring, confirming the stone's quality independently. No buying on faith.
White gold enhances the marquise's cool brilliance. Yellow gold brings warmth to the stone — the historically preferred metal for navette-cut diamonds. Rose gold adds a contemporary feminine softness. All 18K (750 — 75% pure gold).
Questions
Frequently Asked
Everything you need to know about the Marquise Cut Solitaire Ring before you buy.
The marquise cut has a larger table (flat top surface) relative to its carat weight than round brilliants or most other shapes. Carat is a measure of weight, not size — a marquise distributes its weight in a long, flat oval that maximises face-up surface area. A 1.00ct marquise typically measures 11–12mm in length, compared to 6.5mm diameter for a 1.00ct round. On the finger, the elongated shape also catches more light from different angles, adding to the sense of size and presence.
All elongated brilliant cuts — marquise, oval, pear — can show a "bowtie" shadow across the middle of the stone when viewed face-up: two triangular dark patches that resemble a bowtie. This occurs when the cut proportions are not optimised for light return. A slight bowtie is normal and does not affect a well-cut marquise — only strong, dark bowties are considered a defect. Our marquise diamonds are selected for minimal bowtie visibility. The IGI certificate confirms cut quality, and we only offer stones where the bowtie is not visible in normal wear conditions.
Yes — completely real. Lab-grown CVD diamonds are chemically, physically and optically identical to mined diamonds. Both are pure carbon in a cubic crystal lattice. The difference is only origin: mined diamonds formed underground over billions of years; ours are grown in a controlled chamber over 6–10 weeks. The IGI grades them to exactly the same standards. No gemologist can distinguish them by sight or instrument.
Most commonly, the marquise is worn lengthwise along the finger (point toward the knuckle, point toward the hand), which creates the strongest elongating effect. Some wearers prefer to set the marquise east-west (perpendicular to the finger) for a more unconventional look — the same stone read completely differently. Both orientations are entirely correct; it is a matter of personal style. If you would like to discuss the setting orientation before ordering, book a free consultation.
EU ring sizes correspond to the inner circumference of the ring in millimetres. Wrap a strip of paper around your finger, mark where it overlaps, and measure the length in mm — that is your EU size. Most common EU size for women is 52–54. If between sizes, size up for comfort. Free resizing is included within 60 days of purchase. Use our ring sizing guide for a more precise measurement.
