A solitaire setting features the centre stone alone, held in four claws with no additional diamonds. A halo adds a border of brilliant diamonds around the centre stone. The solitaire offers a purer, more understated expression of the cushion cut's inherent beauty, while the halo adds drama and visual size. The cushion cut typically has slightly less light return than a round brilliant — which is the most optically efficient shape — but produces more "fire" (spectral colour flashes). Many prefer the cushion's warm, romantic glow over the round's ice-white sparkle. In platinum, the cushion cut's fire is particularly visible against the cool white background of the metal.
For a square cushion, a ratio of 1.00–1.05 is ideal. For a more rectangular cushion, 1.10–1.20 is preferred.
