The pear cut — also called the teardrop or pendeloque — is one of the most distinctive fancy shapes in diamond cutting. It combines the tapered point of a marquise with the rounded belly of a round brilliant, typically featuring 56–58 facets that distribute light in an elongated, asymmetric pattern quite unlike any other shape. In stud earrings, the pear is traditionally set point-up, which creates a subtle visual illusion of length on the earlobe, making it particularly flattering on all earlobes. Caring for Your Pear Cut Diamond Earrings
Pear cut studs are beautiful but the pointed tip deserves careful handling. The apex of the stone is the thinnest part and, while diamonds are the hardest natural material, a sharp impact can chip a culet or break a tip if the angle is right.
Cleaning: Soak in warm soapy water for 2–3 minutes. Brush gently around the three prongs and beneath the stone's pavilion with a soft toothbrush. Rinse well and pat dry. Keep the water tepid — avoid sudden thermal shocks.
Point protection: The point prong should sit snugly over the tip of the stone. Check this prong annually. If it feels loose, bring the earrings in for a free inspection before the tip becomes exposed.
