The marquise cut — also known as the navette (little boat) — is one of the oldest diamond cuts in existence, said to have been commissioned by Louis XV of France in the 18th century to reflect the shape of the lips of his mistress, the Marquise de Pompadour. The elongated boat shape with two pointed ends produces a larger surface area per carat than almost any other cut, making marquise diamonds appear notably large for their weight. The 55–58 facets are arranged in a brilliant pattern, producing strong light return and fire despite the unusual shape. In pendant form, the marquise hangs vertically, its two points aligned with the chain — creating a striking, directional silhouette quite unlike any other diamond shape.
